Lament for Glasgow

about

Most of the modern world has lost the ability to Lament in a healthy and productive way. At a time when there is so much that needs to be mourned and lamented this is especially dangerous. When we bravely face the reality of our loss and our pain, we start to heal and to invite others into that balm of consolation.

I felt a strong need and desire to write a lament for the city I know and love so well. I hope you find it healing, helpful and that you can promise, with me, to not forget the treasure that is a risk of being lost in these challenging times.

lyrics

The silence of your streets is ringing in my ears
Your sandstone walls are darkened with a million fears
The winter wind is mourning all you used to be
And every window whispers ‘please remember me’

Promise me you won’t forget
And promise me that we’ll ‘tak a cup o’ kindness yet’
We hide away until this winter storm has passed
Promise you’ll still be there when summer comes at last

I won’t pretend that you were perfect - you had flaws
But there was warmth and kindness through your open doors
The light is burning dim the flood is riding high
And every lonely door is deafened by the cry:

Promise me you won’t forget
And promise me that we’ll ‘tak a cup o’ kindness yet’
We hide away until this winter storm has passed
Promise you’ll still be there when summer comes at last

Promise me you won’t forget
And promise me that we’ll ‘tak a cup o’ kindness yet’
